The EPP Group will elect its candidate on Wednesday evening for the election of the President of the European Parliament in January. Roberta Metsola, a Nationalist MEP, will be contesting against Austrian Othmar Karas and Dutch Esther de Lange.
The chosen candidate will then run as the party’s candidate in the EP Presidential election on 17 January. While the EPP believes it has an agreement with the Socialists for a centre-right candidate to take up the President after Italian David Sassoli, a number of Socialists MEPs have put such agreement in doubt over the past few days, with Sassoli himself not excluding an attempt to hold on the Presidency.
