With some 1,400 new cancer cases discovered every year and with a forecast of increasing cases due to an aging population, a new state-of-the-art facility, adjacent to Mater Dei Hospital – Malta’s main hospital – has been built to serve specifically the treatment of cancer.
Known as the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre, the new 113 bed hospital, is equipped with the most recent technology, helping cancer patients to pass from their most difficult of times in the best possible, less stressful, and more dignified way.
Prior to the EU investment, facilities for cancer treatment and palliative care were located at Sir Paul Boffa hospital, an old and dilapidated building, separate from the main healthcare facilities and some 5 kilometres away from Mater Dei Hospital.
The new Oncology Centre, which offers both in and outpatients’ treatments, brought all cancer related services under one roof and is physically connected to Mater Dei in case of more needed and rapid interventions.
This new investment has also reduced the dependency of cancer patients to have to travel abroad for specialised treatment, as in most of the cases, this can now be provided at the new centre.
Obsolete cancer treatment equipment has been replaced with state-of-the-art facilities, including a new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radio therapy equipment.
This is also leading to quicker and more effective diagnosis and treatment while also reducing side effects.
The new facilities are also offering the possibility of more preventive care, detecting any cancer problems earlier and avoiding more future complications as much as possible.
